10 Commandments - Sabbath

Sabbath – The Seventh Day of the Week

On the seventh day, God ended his work and rested. God blessed and sanctified the seventh day. (Genesis 2:2-3)

How do we live a Christian life, follow Jesus Christ, and incorporate His teachings into our daily lives? God has given us a roadmap and a blueprint – it is the Ten Commandments and the Bible.

We would all agree that you should not murder, commit adultery, steal, or lie. These Commandments guide us to understand what it means to love one another. (Matthew 22:39) Click here to read about the Ten Commandments.

How can we demonstrate that we love God? By fully incorporating the first four Commandments into our daily lives. For this post we will focus on the Fourth Commandment (Exodus 20:9-11).

The word “sabbath” can be found 147 time in the KJV Bible, and 55 times in the New Testament. Jesus Christ, the Apostles, and the early church observed the Sabbath. As followers of Jesus, we should observe Sabbath as well.

What day of the week is the Sabbath? In the Abrahamic religions, the seventh day is what we know in our culture as “Saturday”. The meanings of the names of the days of the week are defined here: Etymologies – Days of the Week. As you read through the list, you will realize that the names are related to the sun, moon, little “g” gods, and a goddess. “Sunday” (sun god day) is the first day of the week, not the seventh.

As a family, we have been observing the Sabbath since August 2022. It was a big shift in our lives, and took some major adjustments. Observing the Sabbath has been a huge blessing – the yoke is not burdensome. (Matthew 11:29-30) We have time to read our Bibles, take a rest from our busy work week, and enjoy the day without obligations or distractions.

We keep it simple and do not incorporate the traditions of men. No work by us or on our behalf, minimal cooking, and no buying or selling. We are refining our Sabbath observance, as we grow in understanding of God’s plan for our lives.

As our Savior spoke in Luke 6:5 – And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. (Son of man = Jesus)

Jesus Christ is the Lord of the Sabbath.

Have a Blessed and Joyous Sabbath!
